Meet Mischa! Pretty little Mischa is about 1 year old. Her owners surrendered her to the clinic when they got a new puppy. They did not want a cat anymore because the puppy took up all of their time. Mischa was confused and lonely at first. She has since adjusted to the shelter environment and has opened her heart to accept a new family. Mischa is definitely a lap cat. She is pretty laid back and content to just sit and watch TV with you. She is extremely sweet and affectionate. Mischa will make a great pet. She needs a family that will love her forever and never abandon her again.

We spay/neuter all of our cats and they receive the necessary medical care including Rabies and Distemper vaccines, deworming, de-fleaing and testing for Feline Leukemia/FIV.

Meet Sheldon! This handsome boy is the kind of cat that will sleep on your pillow with you at night. Sheldon is about 1 year old and loves to play, snuggle, and relax while you pet him. Sheldon came up to someone’s house and was crying and pawing at the door. The person told us that he was petrified and was probably being chased by a predator. Once he was inside and safe Sheldon made himself comfortable on her couch. She could not keep Sheldon so he was brought to the shelter. He will make an amazing pet and companion to a new family.

Meet Milo and Macey! These pictures do not do these two kittens justice. Milo and Macey are by far the most affectionate kittens we have ever seen. When you enter the room you can hear them start to purr just because they saw you. When you pick them up they put their front paws on your shoulder and give you kisses on the cheek. When they had their exam with the Doctor they were purring, rolling on the exam table, and bunting the Doctor’s hand as she was trying to do a physical exam. Milo and Macey are about 4 months old and must be adopted together. They love each other almost as much as they love attention. Their owners surrendered Milo and Macey because one of the children had allergies to cats. They need a home where they will get a lot of attention and love. They would do great with children!

Meet Sadie! Sadie is a sweetheart and the perfect lap cat. She is constantly kneading and purring in her bed and purrs even louder when she gets pets and attention. Sadie was left in her apartment when her owners were evicted. They left her behind with another cat to fend for herself and was only left with enough food to last a week. Thankfully, one of the neighbors knew the cats were left behind and contacted the landlord and insisted on entering the apartment to remove the cats. When Sadie was rescued she was out of food and water. Sadie is about three years old and would do well in a home with other cats and with children. She is very gentile and loving. All Sadie requires in return for her love is a forever home.

Meet Oreo! This handsome boy is just as sweet as the cookie! Oreo was left in his apartment with another cat when his owner was evicted. His owner left him behind to fend for himself and only left him with enough food for a week. Thankfully, one of the neighbors knew the cats were left behind and contacted the landlord and insisted on entering the apartment to remove the cats. When Oreo was rescued he was out of food and water. Oreo is about 2 years old and loves people, despite the tarnish of his previous owners. He enjoys playing, snuggling, and just sitting next to you on the couch. He is good with other cats and would do well with children. Oreo needs a family that will love him, care for him, and keep him forever.

We spay/neuter all of our cats and they receive the necessary medical care including Rabies and Distemper vaccines, deworming, de-fleaing and testing for Feline Leukemia/FIV.

Meet Abigail and Gabrielle! These two beautiful girls are only 7 months old and need to find their forever home. Abigail and Gabrielle were left in their house after their owners moved out unexpectedly. They were left inside the house for a week before someone rescued them. After a bath, a big bowl of food, and a little TLC from the staff these girls were as good as new. Abigail and Gabrielle love to play chase, cuddle in your lap, and give you kisses on the cheek. They would do great with kids and with other animals.

Meet Smudge! Smudge’s goofy mustache matches his goofy personality. This sweet boy is only about 10 months old and has a heart of gold. Smudge loves to sit in your lap and purr. He is gentle during snuggle time but still likes to run around and play. Smudge was left in a carrier outside of a grocery store. The security cameras outside the store witnessed Smudge’s previous owners leaving him outside to fend for himself, without food or water or shelter. Thankfully one of the employees rescued him and brought him to the shelter. Smudge is grateful for the safe haven but now he needs a family that will love him and cherish him forever.

Luke was surrendered to the animal shelter when his owners were evicted from their home. Not only did Luke loose his home, but he also lost his family. Even though he has had a rough life, Luke is determined to find his forever home. Luke is about 8 years old but still acts like a young cat. Luke loves to play and look out the window. He constantly wants to get out of his cage and spend time with people. Luke will make a great companion and family member.

Meet Otis! This handsome boy is about 3 years old and a big teddy bear. Otis was surrendered with his brother when his owners were evicted from their home and could not take care of the cats any longer. Otis spent his whole life with his previous owners which made adjustment to the shelter very difficult. Now that he has mourned the loss of his family, he is showing us his true personality. Otis loves to be petted and roam around with the other shelter cats. He gets along with cats and would do well with children. Otis yearns for the security of a home and a family again and will make an amazing pet.

Meet Stella! Stella is a beautiful cat who is about 2 years old. Stella’s previous owner dropped her off at a pet-sitter and never came back to get her. The pet-sitter could not get in contact with the owner and we stepped up and took her in. Obviously the last few months has been a very confusing and scary time for Stella. She was abandoned by her owner, without even a goodbye, and dropped off at a shelter. She is a great cat and we cannot understand why her owner would leave her. Stella is the perfect lap cat. She is content to sit on your lap and snuggle and purr all evening while you pet her. Stella does well with other cats but needs time to adjust to new situations. Stella would be eternally grateful to the family or person that gave her a forever home.

Meet Sophie! Sophie has been at the shelter the longest out of all of our cats. She is extremely cute, good-natured, and snuggly. Unfortunately, she often gets looked over because she is about 10 years old. Sophie may be considered an “elderly” cat, but she does NOT live up to that term. She still has a pep in her step and a lively personality. We think that Sophie was abandoned by her owners when they did not want her anymore. She was found outside with extremely matted fur, in desperate need of a bath, and a cold. After a bath, a grooming, and some medicine, Sophie was complete fixed up and has awaited her chance for adoption ever since. Sophie would do well with other cats, children, and even dogs.

She is staying at Care for Animals at 2944 Post Rd, Warwick, RI. She is spayed, vaccinated for rabies and distemper, Feline Leukemia and Feline AIDS tested, and dewormed. If you are Interested in Sophie please email us at careforanimals@verizon.net or call the clinic at 401-739-7387

We have been gradually expanding out shelter facility to accommodate more and more cats that have been surrendered or need to be taken off the streets. Currently we have 25 adult cats residing at Care for Animals. The majority of cats have suffered from abuse and neglect and have only experienced a life of hardship – until now. All of our cats deserve to have a loving and caring home with owners who will incorporate them into their families forever.

Unfortunately the costs of rescuing and housing these cats are rising with every new cat at the shelter. We NEVER want to say no to a cat in need, especially due to money. This is why we need your help! We are asking you to sponsor one of our cats for $25. This $25 will cover the cost of housing, feeding, and providing care for one of our adult cats for an entire month!

If you are interested in sponsoring one of our adult cats or one of our special circumstances cats for the month of December please donate via “Chip-In” (but please let us know when you do so we will know when a cat is sponsored) or mail a check to Care for Animals (2944 Post Rd, Warwick, RI 02886). Pictures of the cats are shown below, you can also read about the cats in the adoption section of the website. When you sponsor a cat please notify us as to which cat your wish to sponsor. Thank you for your generosity and consideration

Start: Autumn, Beauty, Charlie, Clara, Coral, Esme, Sable, Theodore, Gabe, Hunter, Izzy, Naomi, Chloe, Sophie, Willow, Sydney, Handsome and Mickie (Tucker and King Not Shown): END

Top 10 Reasons to Adopt an Adult Cat
1.	The cat you adopt has no surprises. Adult cats are fully mature and have become the cat that they will be, in both size and personality. The tiny kitten you adopt one day could turn into a small mountain lion. Also, the extremely playful, rambunctious kitten could turn in to be the biggest couch potato. With adult cats you know how active they are and their likes and dislikes on the day of adoption, not a year later.

2.	Kittens are naughty! Most people know it comes with the territory but some are surprised when they get home and find all the papers on their desk scattered on the floor with little-kitten-teeth marks all over them. Kittens get bored very easily and just as easily find trouble to get in to. Adult cats are more content and less ADD than kittens.

3.	Your current cat might not want a little pest chasing his/her tail all day. It might seem like a good idea to adopt a kitten to give your existing cat a friend and a playmate, but sometime the age and maturity gap is too large to bridge. Instead of becoming a friend a kitten often becomes an annoyance to your current cat. Introducing an adult cat to a current cat can be less stressful because mature cats respect territory and personal space, something kittens haven’t learned yet.

4.	Do you want a snuggle buddy? Yes, kittens can be very snuggly and sweet but only after an hour or more of intense playtime. They have A LOT of energy. If they are left at home during the day while you are at work they may take that time to sleep and rest, knowing that they wont see you until after work. Once you get home from work its GO TIME and the kittens has saved up all its energy for you.

5.	And don’t think that energy ends when you are ready for bed! Your feet become the ultimate toy when you move them under the covers. Cats are naturally nocturnal animals so this is almost inevitable. Although kittens can be put on a schedule, it takes time and work. Adult cats are much easier to schedule because they have only a quarter of the crazy energy that kittens have.

6.	Kittens are easily amused. This may sound like a good thing until they are knocking all the make-up off your counter, climbing up your “light-blocking” curtains and making holes that aren’t so “light-blocking”, attacking you as you round the corner, and even getting into food on the counter. Kittens just can’t help it because they have an urge to explore. Adult cats have been there and done that. They will still explore and have curiosity towards new things, but much less extreme.

7.	Worried about your cat scratching your kids? Kittens have tiny, razor sharp nails when they are little and they haven’t learned when to use them and when not to use them. Adult cats have larger nails that do not puncture as easily and they have learned to use their claws only when necessary.

8.	Adult cats are easy! You can leave them with some food, water, and a litter box all day and come home to your house exactly the way you left it. They are low maintenance because cats are independent animals by nature. Kittens have just been separated from their litter and are still learning to be independent.

9.	Most of the time adult cats end up in shelters because they were found lonely on the streets, had irresponsible owners, and relatively bad luck. Adult cats in shelters have a history. A history that will make them even more appreciative of a loving home and family.

10.	Kittens get adopted every day while adult cats sit in their cage and watch them come and go. On average a kitten is in a shelter for 1 week before adoption while an adult cat is usually at the shelter anywhere from 1 month, to 6 months, or more.

The hot summer heat means sandy beaches, golden tans, and worst of all, heat stroke. Heat stroke occurs when your pet’s overall body temperature becomes hotter than normal. Many respiratory, cardiac and organ functions rely on a normal body temperature to function properly. Because of this, heat stroke is deadly. Symptoms of heat stroke include vigorous panting, dark red gums, dry mucus membranes (such as eyes), unwilling or unable to get up and dizziness. Once you notice these symptoms in your pet, they require immediate medical attention and action.

Steps to take when your pet has heat stroke:
1.	Remove your pet from the heat and direct sunlight immediately.
2.	Start to cool your pet off by placing wet rags on the foot pads and across the back.
3.	DO NOT USE ICE OR VERY COLD WATER.
4.	Make water available to your pet but do not force your pet to drink.
5.	Call and visit the vet ASAP to make sure there is no internal damage.

A pet’s owner causes the majority of heat stroke cases. Leaving your dog or cat in the car for as little as 10 minutes on a hot summer day can be deadly. The best way to prevent heat stroke is to not leave your pet in the car when the temperature is above 75 degrees. When that is not possible, make sure you leave the windows down or the car on with the air conditioning on. Remember, our pets cannot sweat to cool off; panting is their only way to release body heat. In a hot car it is nearly impossible to release enough body heat to keep their body temperature down.

When you bring your dog in for his annual check-up, do you ever wonder why we insist on heartworm testing and then sending you home with heartworm pills? As the name implies, heartworms are parasitic worms that live and grow in the heart and lungs of your dog. Heartworms are passed in the larvae stage to your dog through the bite of a mosquito. Think about how many times you are bitten by a mosquitoes on a single summer night, your dog gets bitten just as much. Each of those bites have the possibility of infecting your dog with heartworms. Heartworm pills kill the early stages of larvae before they can grow into adult worms and cause disease in your dog. It is very important to give your dog a heartworm pill once a month, every month to prevent the worms from manifesting in your dogs body. If they are allowed to grow they can cause heart and lung complications, infections, and even heart failure and death. If your dog isn’t on heartworm preventative yet, we sell Iverhart Plus for dogs of all sizes. The prices for 6-packs are as follows: 1-25lbs $22, 26-50lbs $27, and 51-100lbs $32.

The warm weather gives rise to fleas and ticks outside. Fleas are blood-sucking parasites that cause your pet to be extremely uncomfortable and itchy. Flea infestations on kittens and puppies can lead to severe anemia and death. They spread easily from one pet to another causing a household infestation that is extremely difficult to control.

Ticks are also blood-sucking parasites that can infect your pet with various tick-borne infections, the most known being Lyme disease. Lyme disease in dogs can cause chronic lameness, arthritis, and inflammation of the joints, which cause extreme discomfort for your pet. A vaccine for Lyme disease is available but it is not 100% effective.

The most effective way to protect your pet from both parasites is PREVENTION. Topical flea and tick preventions like Frontline, Advantage, and Advantix stop fleas and ticks from biting and attaching to your pet. These monthly applications are extremely affordable and will prevent chronic infections and unmanageable infestations.
